Im Unterschied zur hereditären Lymphangioleiomyomatose entsteht die somatische Lymphangioleiomyomatose durch Mutationen im Laufe des Lebens und kann nicht weiter vererbt werden. Die Symptome sind wie bei der hereditären Lymphangiomyomatose zunehmende Dyspnoe, Chylothorax und peripheren Ödemen. Als Ursache lassen sich Mutetionen im TsC2-Gen in denGewebeproben und seltener auch im peripheren Blut nachweisen.
